Air Fresheners for Your Car

If there’s one place that’s prone to strong odors, it’s a car. Commuting with sweaty kids, pets, food, and other elements that are bound to smell can make those Sunday drives considerably less pleasant.

Because cars tend to be smelly, it’s fortunate that air fresheners exist. However, fresheners are not always safe. Many of them contain chemicals that can be irritating to the eyes and lungs.

Fortunately, there are all-natural ways to keep your car smelling fresh. Here are some things you can try.

Why Air Fresheners are Unhealthy

Have you ever bought a product and you see that one of the ingredients is noted as ‘fragrance’? Have you ever wondered what exactly composes this ‘fragrance’?

Air fresheners are often made with these mystery fragrances. For years manufacturers have been telling anyone that asks that this is a special secret ingredient, but more recently, it has been found that the fresheners are created with Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOC’s) that get suspended in the air where they can harm the respiratory system and cause other adverse health effects.

In addition to containing VOCs, air fresheners may also contain formaldehyde, a known carcinogen and phthalates which can cause birth defects and reproductive issues.

Natural Air Freshener Alternatives

Now that we know air fresheners are unhealthy, the question is, what do we do to keep the air fresh in our cars without creating an unhealthy environment? Here are some ideas.

Fabric Softener Sheets

Fabric softener sheets can be hung in front of your air conditioner vents to freshen the air. You can also make small punctures in the corner of a box of dryer sheets and place it under your seat to keep your car smelling good. Not only do these smell great, they are healthy and they last longer than other types of air fresheners.

Coffee Beans

If you love the smell of coffee, try placing some beans inside a small mesh bag, sock, or paper bag. Leave them under the seat to add an invigorating scent to your car. Be sure to replace the beans every few days to keep your car smelling fresh.

Essential Oils

Essential oils can be dabbed on cotton balls that can be placed in your side pockets or vents to fill your car with a terrific scent. You may also consider using a diffuser that can be placed in the console. Use a peppermint oil to minimize dizziness and car sickness.

The Zum brand makes an aromatherapy mist that is all natural and has a terrific scent. Zum Mist Aromatherapy Room and Body Mist has a bright, tart aroma that’s invigorating and perfect for mental clarity and boosting focus. It is made with simple ingredients like purified water, essential oils, and vegetable glycerin. It does not contain any chemical emulsifiers.

A car is prone to odors that can be hard to get rid of. The tips in this article provide all-natural solutions that will help you keep the air in your car fresh. How do you get your vehicle smelling great?
