Mullen reveals Five electric crossover, plans US production

A new startup automotive company is launching in California to challenge Tesla and other established carmakers in the electric-vehicle market.

Mullen Technologies was the company that presented the Five crossover vehicle at Wednesday’s 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show. Now, the company is accepting orders. They expect to be able to deliver by mid-2024.

Mullen has been relatively quiet, but has reached some important milestones, including becoming public through a SPAC with Net Element and going public in the Nasdaq SPAC. Also, Mullen completed the acquisition of Robinsonville in Mississippi in November.

Mullen intends to construct the Five and a pair commercial vans in the same plant.

The Five is a compact crossover that targets vehicles such as the Tesla Model Y or Volkswagen ID. This EV-based platform will provide a battery of 95 kilowatts per hour that provides a range of 325 miles in the standard version. According to the manufacturer, it can reach speeds of up to 155 mph while accelerating from 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds.

Other options will be available, including a Five RS model which can go from 0-60 mph at 1.9 seconds to a maximum speed of over 200 mph. This is the Tesla Model S Plaid’s performance.

Mullen stated that pricing would start at $55,000. Leasing deals are also being considered by the company.

Mullen previously showed the Dragonfly K50 sport car. However, it is unknown when this model will be available. Mullen stated in 2019 that the sports car would go to Spokane County in Washington. However, the company made a recent statement saying the car will be imported from China, where it was already available as the Qiantu K50.

If all goes according to plan Mullen will introduce two additional models. These crossovers will be positioned in mid-size and compact segments.
